Wow,
I can't believe the holiday season is fast approaching. Noviembre or November is finally here, bringing us one month closer to the end of the year or año.

This picutre pretty much shows what November weather or el tiempo de noviembre looks like where I live. The month starts out rainy lluvioso  and by the end of the month I'll have snowflakes floating gently by my window and the ground will covered in a blanket of white snow nieve blanco.

The blog will be taking on a holiday theme over the next couple months. My life gets real busy around the holidays, so I'll be posting regularly, but at odd hours. Sometimes I'll be posting in the morning, sometimes at night, bascially whenever I get a chance to get a post up I will. I may miss a day or two, but will try my best not to.

October - Octubre

El primero de Octubre de 2014
The first of October.

Hola,
I can't believe how quickly septiembre passed by. I didn't post anything ayer yesterday because I've been real busy getting the month of octubre ready. I should of did a quick post , but honestly it just didn't seem like I had the time. Lo siento, sorry.

O.k. I guess I should worn you all now. I'm a Halloween / Samhain nut, and the blog will be taking on a Octubre / Halloween / Samhain type theme. I'm a bit of an all around holiday nut so the blog really will take on some different looks over the next few months, and the posts will reflect the season or as we say in español, se dice temporada = you say season.

While we in el estados unidos = The United States celebrate Halloween and Samhain, many people in Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries celebrate  Día De Los Muertos or the day of the dead. I'm planning on learning a bit more about this holiday and posting what I find here. For now you could check out this wiki.

Now that the cooler weather is here I should be dedicating more time to my Spanish studies as well. I really haven't had the time to check out the course at spanishpod101.com. I got a free 7 day trial, and I think the site offers many freebies but course downloads cost $7.00 a month at the time of this writing. I'm thinking about signing up , they offer beginner / intermediate / and advanced. I enjoyed the little bit of material that I checked out. I'll probably post a more indepth review later in the month.

With that said, mi palabra del día es octubre - my word of the day is October. I will leave you with the graphic of the day, thanks for stopping by and learning Spanish with me. Buen día = good day.

Octubre = October.

A menudo se piensa que el color azul en una mariposa simboliza la alegría, el color o un cambio de suerte.

Conversational Spanish - Let's start with Hello - ¡Hola!

Viernes, 12 de Septiembre de 2014

¡Hola! = Hello

¿Cómo estás? = How are you ?
¡Hola! - Hello. ¿Cómo estás? -How are you?

Just about every conversation starts with hello. In Spanish you would say "¡Hola!" which means hello. Usually when someone says hello, you reply "How are you?" in Spanish you would say "¿Cómo estás?". You could also reply informal "¿Qué pasa? "what's going on?" or very informal "¿Qué tal?" which is sort of like an American "what's up?".

There you have it. One=uno hello and three=tres replies. Adios = goodbye.

Triste - sad

Jueves, 11 de Septiembre de 2014

Triste - sad.

Triste - sad
En frase:

Estoy triste porque el clima está cambiando.
I am sad because the climate/weather is changing.

Another confusing word in Spanish is el tiempo. El tiempo can mean the time or the weather. I used the term clima = climate as a reference to the atmosphere and the changing season.

Por ejemplo : for example :

Hace buen tiempo.
The weather is good. (It makes good weather) is a more accurate translation but that is how it is said when referring to the weather or el tiempo

El tiempo can also be a measure of time or reference to time. Por ejemplo:

No tengo tiempo.
I don't have time.

¿Qué hora es?
What time is it? (What hour is it?) is how you ask the time.

Yes, Spanish can be a bit confusing at times. Hope this helps and didn't overly confuse you. If you are confused, don't be, in time it will start to make sense.

Septiembre - September

El primero de septiembre de 2014
The first of September 2014

Septiembre - September.

El mes es septiembre - The month is September.

Septiembre sol. = September sun.
This summer really went by fast. I can't believe its Septiembre already. Please forgive the shameless self promotion, but I was working on my design blog, or at least changing it up for the coming season and thought I'd kill two birds with one stone. I added the septiembre to my blog header and used it for this post. If you're into web design and graphic design related stuff please check out the blog at http://the-design-blog.new-aeon-design.com/

I thought I'd start el primero de septiembre with a little blog news and do a general update. I'm an amateur photographer and I usually like to supply most of the pictures I post on the blog, occasionally I run out of stuff to post and have to find other resources. So, I'd like to give credit where credit is due and thank the fine photographers of morguefile.com for supplying the photo's for the last two weeks of agosto (August).  If you're a blogger and ever need free stock photography to work with I highly recommend them. You can check out my profile here. <-- more shameless self promotion. ¡Lo siento!, sorry.

This month I have a couple surprises and I think I'm going to be changing around the graphics a little bit. I've been wanting to try out some different designs so I think I'm going to try them on some of the posts here. We'll see how it works out.

So for a little Spanish related news…. I signed up for a free trial at spanishpod101.com and really like the service. They offer a free month of service , and then membership plans vary, they have a $4.00 a month plan and I think I may sign up for that when my trial ends. I really like the podcasts, and they have fantastic pronunciations. In each podcast they use more and more Spanish, and less and less English.  I think this process kind of eases you into a more advanced Spanish class, where only Spanish is spoken. That's where I would like to be this time next year. Anyway, try out the free trial, you might like it, and for the record, I'm not affiliated or profiting from the link, just posting because I feel it's pertinent Spanish news for this month.

On a final note, I've been plugging away at my Spanish app from babble. Free app link can be found in the sidebar of the blog. I do profit from that if you shop at Amazon, but only if you by something other than the app. I like the app a lot, I got side tracked last week, didn't do it, and had 150 words to review the other day :-( I'm all caught up now though.

Well, I'm looking forward to the coming month and the change of seasons. Looking forward to learning Spanish and sharing on the blog. Thanks for reading, feel free to comment, and thanks for following Mi Palabra Del Día.

¡Hasta pronto! - See you soon.

El granero. - The Barn

miércoles, 20 de agosto de 2014

El granero = The barn.

El granero = barn
En frase = In phrase.

El granero es viejo y grande. = The barn is old and large.

El granero is also sometimes called an establo.  I suppose if it's filled with grain granero is appropriate, and if it's full of livestock it would be safe to call it an establo like we use the term stable as in a horse stable.

Bonus phrase.

El cielo está nublado. = The sky is cloudy.

Note : O.K. this es y está are one of those things that really confuse the heck out of me. I'm getting better with it, I think, but here's a tip to help use the two properly.

El granero es viejo y grande. Is considered a permanent state so you use es. In other words the barn is always going to be old and large. It is in a non changing state.

El cielo está nublado. Is considered a changing state. The sky is cloudy now but the sky could be sunny later. So you can use está when things are in a changing state.

This is just one example of when to use es y está . I read this tip somewhere and it has helped me somewhat but I still get it wrong from time to time but hopefully I got it right now in this blog post ;) There are other occasions when you change it up, but I'm going to leave that for another blog post when I have a better understanding of these two words.

If you have any tips or a better explanation of es y está please leave a comment and share.
